What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate Marketing is an exciting referral based marketing system in which an online partnership is formed between 2 web sites and replicated among thousands of affiliates. In the following example, the “Merchant” (Green Mountain Coffee) provides an affiliate program to have a web site “Affiliate” refer customers to Green Mountain Coffee (for example, the site 60secondcoffee.com) makes a commission for referring traffic to the Green Mountain Coffee site if the visitor purchases some coffee. The affiliate program rewards affiliates for increases in sales volume by referring traffic and qualified leads. What is great from the merchant side is that you only pay commissions when they produce revenue! For example, if you pay a 10% commission on sales and you have a minimum payout of $50 in commission than an affiliate has to sell $500 in products first! If an affiliate refers $499 in business they don’t get paid till they sell $500.
Can I make money in Affiliate Marketing?
As an attendee and board member of Affiliate Summit, the largest trade show dedicated to Affiliate Marketing the answer is defiantly yes. However, just like any new business you start you need to prepare a plan of attack. Not all deals are the same. You may have a strong feeling towards Apple but at 1% commission you have to sell a boatload of product to make anything. If you choose a niche attitude and go after smaller brands you will find the margin improves and also your competition goes down as well. My suggestion is to start with a program like GroomingLounge.com, that offers a 8% commission with an average sale of $100. That means $8 commission per sale versus $1 – $2 commission from Apple.
